If we try to slow down the aging process, we will only succeed if we understand what is going on in our body. Not overcoming longevity and eternal youth, but quality of life is at the forefront of our interest.
Theory of aging
If, for example, we try to slow down the aging process in well-aging medicine, we will only succeed if we understand what is going on in our body. To understand this, we need to know the "theory of aging." Due to the number of causes and influencing factors, there is no single theory of aging, only more explanatory theories that emphasize the various factors of the aging process. The most important of these theories will be briefly explained in the following text.- Free radical theory
- AGE theory
- Neuroendocrine theory
- Free radical theory
Free radical theory
When a machine ages, it rusts. Chemically, this process is called oxidation. There is a great similarity to the human body. Aging also takes place due to oxidative substances - free radicals. Free radials are formed due to external causes, such as UV radiation, smoking or environmental influences (poisons from the environment). The most important part is created in the human body. Free radicals are molecules that lack one electron in their electron orbit. This gives them an extraordinary reactivity in which they try to retrieve the missing electron from another bond. This also damages these other bonds and partly makes them free radicals. This creates a chain reaction. Due to free radicals, cellular organelles, especially mitochondria, which are the centers of resources for the body, are damaged many times over. Oxidative damage has far-reaching consequences for mitochondria: damaged mitochondria produce less energy and at the same time increase the release of free radicals, which in turn damage mitochondria. Therefore, the cells receive less and less energy and the radicals multiply, the organism ages. Arterial calcification - arteriosclerosis, decline in mental function in old age and also the incidence of cancer are very closely related to the action of free radicals.AGE theory
From childhood we know the great sweet taste of cotton candy and extremely sticky feeling in the mouth. Indeed, sugar is one type of glue. This also applies to blood glucose. Above all, it likes to bind with proteins. Biochemically, we refer to this process as glycosylation. With high blood sugar, this process can go so far that proteins can separate. This creates inelastic (inelastic) bonds that lose their flexibility and original function. These end glycosylation end products are called Advanced glycosylation end products (AGE) and are another factor in aging.Neuroendocrine theory
Many hormones are known to decline in old age. This is very important for one hormone - estrogen. Around the age of 50, there is a menopause (menopause), which is associated with a reduction in the production of sex hormones in a very short time. Although this is a normal process, this hormonal decline can still cause many changes. Typical symptoms of the transition are hot flushes, sleep disorders and depressive changes. Hormonal deficiency also causes organic changes. The skin and mucous membranes are thinner and drier, the bones are decalcified and become more brittle, and the risk of heart attack and stroke is rising. Many of these menopausal problems can be improved in old age by targeted hormone replacement therapy. This thesis, which is based on neuroendocrine theory, says: no, because it ages, hormones decrease, but because hormones decrease, it ages. Hormones that decline in old age include the male sex hormone testosterone, the adrenal hormone DHEA, the pineal hormone melatonin, and the growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary gland. At this point, it should be emphasized that in addition to hormone replacement therapy, other factors are needed, especially exercise, healthy and complete nutrition and personal involvement of patients.
